How HR Teams Can Support Employee Mental Health

2 min read

Supporting employee mental health is an important responsibility for HR teams and workplace leaders. A practical, proactive approach helps create a healthier workplace culture and gives employees clearer pathways to support.

Why workplace mental health support matters

Employees may experience stress, anxiety, depression, burnout or other mental health challenges at different stages of their working lives. HR teams do not need to diagnose or treat mental health conditions, but they can help build an environment where people feel safe to speak up and seek appropriate assistance.

Five practical actions for HR teams

1. Build mental health literacy. Provide staff and leaders with practical information about common mental health challenges, warning signs and respectful ways to start a conversation.

2. Train workplace mental health first aiders. Accredited training gives selected employees the confidence and skills to recognise signs of mental health problems, provide initial support and encourage professional help when appropriate.

3. Strengthen workplace policies. Review policies for psychological safety, bullying, workload, flexible work, leave and return-to-work support. Make sure employees know where to find help.

4. Equip managers. Managers should understand how to respond with empathy, maintain appropriate boundaries, listen without judgement and connect employees with internal or external support services.

5. Measure and improve. Use confidential feedback, participation data and regular reviews to identify what is working and where further support is needed.

The role of Mental Health First Aid training

Mental Health First Aid training complements an organisation’s wellbeing strategy. It helps participants recognise signs of mental health problems, respond appropriately to a developing crisis and support someone until professional help or other appropriate assistance is available.

Training can be delivered online, in blended formats or face-to-face, making it easier for organisations to build capability across different teams and locations.

Create a more supportive workplace

A mentally healthier workplace is built through everyday actions: informed conversations, supportive leadership, clear policies and access to appropriate assistance. HR teams can lead this work by making mental health part of normal workplace planning rather than treating it as an occasional initiative.

MHFAT provides Standard, Youth and Workplace Mental Health First Aid training across Sydney, New South Wales and Australia. Contact the team to discuss a practical training option for your organisation.
